Meet the Maker
Hey! My name is Hollie Arnett and I’m a typographer & hand lettering artist living in Wellington, New Zealand. I’m the founder of Black & White Studios and I wanted to introduce myself!
A Shift Towards Typography & Lettering
It was a hard decision to name my new studio after something that wasn’t just my own name. For so long I’ve been known as “Hollie Arnett Design” and I still am in some places, but I wanted this new venture to be separate from what I’ve been doing in the past. Under Hollie Arnett Design, I’ve done a lot of graphic and web design, which I still do as part of my role as Creative Director at DesignGel, the design agency I co-run here in Wellington. I wanted to make an intentional shift in the direction of typography and lettering, so to make that distinction from my past work, I started fresh with a new name to match the new direction!
My Typographic History
So, a little about me. I was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire in England, and moved across the world to Christchurch, New Zealand when I was 10 years old. I studied painting, photography and design in high school, before going on to complete a Bachelor of Design with Honours, majoring in Visual Communication Design at Massey University in Wellington.
I have been working as a designer for a number of years now as a Freelancer, Marketing Designer and UX/UI Designer and am currently in roles as a Visual Media Director and Creative Director.
As my life seemed to be steering in the direction of UX/UI Design, I realised that I wasn’t happy with that direction. Throughout my experiences with working in startups, agencies and in-house studios, I quickly understood that I wasn’t made to work for others. My dreams are too big and my mind too creative to be stuck in a 9-5 job. I work best when my mind can run free, I can make quick, creative decisions, and I can let my creativity run my day, so I decided to go at it on my own and follow my typographic dreams!
I fell in love with letters throughout my time at university. I did papers on typography, letterpress, printmaking, editorial design, information design and interpretive type, and I loved every minute. Both my Dad and Granddad also used to work with type, so the ink runs in my veins I think! From then on, I’ve been obsessed with all sorts of glyphs in all shapes and sizes and I can’t get enough. I am now a member of the International Society of Typographic Design (ISTD) and am also a typography tutor at Massey University Wellington, giving back to the place that taught me so much about typography!
More Than Just Design
When I’m not working on designy things, I can probably be found making videos for my Youtube channel, spending time with my boyfriend, listening to pop punk music or podcasts, watching terrible TV shows, reading books, or dreaming of owning a French Bulldog! I’m also a big fan of Maltesers, cups of tea, new pens, and geeking out over tech things!
I’m beyond excited about this new adventure, and the idea of being able to work with letters all day long is an absolute dream come true. This goal is what motivates me and I can’t wait to see it come to fruition!
