The 5 Big Business Goals I Want to Smash Next Year
This year, I took the leap and began running Black & White Studios full time. While it’s been amazing so far, it’s been a bit directionless. To be honest, I’ve just been cranking along, doing work that will help pay my bills and keep me alive, and not doing a whole lot of work towards the future, which is awesome, but doesn't feel super productive!
One of my 5 StrengthsFinder strengths is futuristic, meaning that I am the type of person who is always thinking about and fascinating over the future and what it has to hold. Because of this, I have super strong visions for my future and goals that I want to achieve along the way, both personally and in business.
There have been things that I have wanted to do for years that I have just been putting off, but as we head into 2018, I’m committing to them, writing them down and setting them up as my business goals for the new year. I wanted to share them so that 1) I am held accountable so that I actually achieve them, 2) I can look back at the end of 2018 and see if I achieved them, and 3) you can get excited along with me for the future of Black & White Studios!
So here goes - the business goals I’m pumped to smash are as follows...
Design & Release a Typeface
I have always, always, ALWAYS wanted to design a typeface, and by typeface I don’t just mean a font, I mean a fully fledged font family with multiple weights, glyphs, numbers and the whole shebang! It’s been something that has been on my mind but I’ve just never gotten around to doing, until now!
I know that font design is not an easy task, so it might take me a few goes, or be released in stages, and will definitely take me a long time, but I am so excited!
The first task I need to overcome is deciding what style of typeface I want to design, and then I’ll be off! At this stage, I’m thinking of a geometric sans-serif, because those are the typefaces I love the most and I’ve never really found the perfect one for me, so I might start there!
Design & Paint a Large-Scale Mural
Something else that I’ve always dreamt about, visualised and hoped for is to design and paint a large-scale mural. Some of my favourite typographic artists like Mrs Eaves, Kelly Spencer, Efdot and Stefan Kunz have all done incredible murals that I just wish I would get to do!
The ultimate dream in my opinion is to spend my days drawing and painting letterforms, so I just need to take the baby steps along the way to get there! That might start with small illustrations, and then maybe turn into one mural, which then evolves into the opportunity to do more murals and so on, who knows!
I’m not 100% sure where to start with this goal, but I WILL get there!
Design & Sell the First Black & White Studios Product Collection
When I first started Black & White Studios in early 2017, before I was doing it full time, I released several prints which I sell online and showed in an exhibition here in Wellington. This has been super fun and an amazing opportunity to learn about the process of producing products, but now I’m ready to take things to the next level!
I’ve had some requests for different products, like tshirts and tote bags, and there are some other products that I’d personally love to try, so I’m looking to expand the offering! I also think that the original prints were quite unrelated to each other, so this time I will be creating a full collection of products that work together alongside one another!
I’d love to know what products and designs you’d love to see, so let me know!!
Teach Monthly Workshops
This year I’ve had the honour and privilege of teaching typography at Massey University, and running several hand-lettering workshops. If you know me at all, you’ll know that I love to teach and I’m so passionate about empowering creativity in others, so this has been one of my favourite things about this year.
My goal for next year is to eventually be teaching monthly workshops about lettering, typography, creativity, business and anything in between! These workshops could be in person or online, from one-on-one to large groups, and vary in topics. I’m open to how these workshops look, work and run, but I just know that I want to keep teaching and do it more regularly, so I’m hoping to integrate workshops into Black & White Studios more and more!
If you know anywhere or anyone that hosts workshops, or have any requests for the type of workshops you’d like me to run, let’s chat!
Write & Release an eBook
Along similar lines in regards to teaching, my last goal for next year is to write and release an eBook or two. I love to write and if I hadn’t been a designer, I definitely would have studied English because I love it that much. Writing an eBook is a small step towards combining my love of design, teaching and empowering others, and writing. I will get to write about something I love and hopefully teach and encourage people along the way!
At this stage, I’m thinking of writing an Introduction to Typography eBook, and an Introduction to Brush Pen Lettering eBook, so watch this space and let me know which you’d like to read!
There are a whole bunch of other, little goals that I’m also hoping to smash next year, as well as some more bigger ones that I’m saving for a later date, because I think that trying to focus on too many will probably stop me from achieving any! Therefore, these 5 are the main ones that I will be focusing on in 2018!
I am so excited to see what next year brings, and I’m stoked to bring you along for the ride! I’d love to hear what your business goals are for 2018 too - maybe we can help each other out and keep each other accountable! Tweet me your goals, or leave them in the comments below!
Thanks for all of your support this year - bring on 2018!
