We’re all here to connect with the wonderful, magical clients and customers of our dreams. But how do we pinpoint exactly who the heck they are?

We’ve talked a lot before about how to develop and communicate your brand strategy, but you also need to be sure of *who* you’re communicating with. It’s a super critical part of building your creative business and understanding what finding your perfect people can do for you.

If you’re ready to know exactly who your ideal audience is, how to find them, and why that’s so important for connecting and selling to them, then read on because we’ve got all the goodies you need to know!

What Is An Ideal Audience?

There are a bunch of different words thrown around to describe your ideal audience, like target audience, audience persona or client avatar. Basically, they’re your dream, perfect, ideal people that you’re trying to attract, appeal to and engage with your brand.

Pinpointing these people is all about understanding who they are so that you can capture their attention, speak specifically to them, and make sure that you’re selling your products and services to the people who are perfect for them.

Choosing Your Audience: Myth Busters

Before we dive into why it’s so important to pinpoint your audience, it’s time to bust some myths and drop some truth bombs.

When you speak to everyone, you speak to no one.

It can be tempting to want to reach everybody with your business, but it doesn’t really work. Your brand becomes generic and diluted as you try to appeal to all kinds of different people. Instead, you want to speak to the RIGHT people.

When you find the right people, you can shout from the rooftops about the specific things they want to hear. That way, you’ll be targeting people who will become raving fans that can’t wait to tell everybody about you because you’re just so perfect for them.

Pinpointing your people will help you grow, not limit how you scale.

You may feel like you’re limiting yourself by niching like this, but you’re actually doing the opposite. The more that you can attract and wow the right people, the more people you’re going to reach. Then, when you knock their socks off with a message specific to them, they’re going to want to tell other people about it. Your recognition will be on the rise and you’ll have more opportunities to scale.

The 3 Different Audience Types

To better understand who you’re targeting, let’s take a look at the different types of people that make up your audience.

1. Primary Audience

These are the people that you currently serve, sell to or work with the most. They bring in most of your work and income but might not necessarily be your ideal, dream people.

2. Secondary Audience

Some people are attracted to what you do but aren’t who you’re specifically targeting. For example, Maker & Moxie targets creatives and makers, but sometimes we attract designers who want to learn how to deliver strategy.

3. Ideal Audience

This right here is who we’re talking about today. These are the people you’d love to have in your corner as clients and customers. You want to attract more of these people because working with them makes you so damn happy.

6 Reasons Why Creatives Need to Pinpoint Their People

1. Get your work in front of the right people

When you know who your people are and where to find them, you can make sure that your work is in the right place at the right time in order to be found by the right people.

Find out where they spend their time, such as social media, conferences, magazines or podcasts, and think about how you can get your brand into those places to be discovered.

2. Attract attention

Once your brand is in front of the right people, you want them to notice and pay attention to it. To do this, you need to understand what catches the eye of your ideal audience and makes them fall in love with what you do.

3. Keep people engaged

Your perfect person has noticed your brand - now you want them to stay engaged. By pinpointing your people, you know what interests and attracts them, and you can use this to hold their attention for as long as possible.

4. Sell your work

When you have an engaged audience who love your work, it’s the perfect time to sell. It’s going to be so much easier to market and sell to people when you know exactly what they need, how they need it and what’s going to get them to buy.

5. Keep people coming back

It is infinitely easier and cheaper to keep an existing customer than it is to attract a new one. If you know what’s going to keep your audience coming back for more, then you can create those experiences to have more repeat customers than ever.

6. Referrals and recommendations

People are more likely to buy when it’s been suggested by someone they trust. When you know what’s important to your audience and who they share that with, you’ll have all the info you need to wow them and get them referring and recommending you to everyone they know.

As you can see, pinpointing your people is a super important part of branding and building your business. It’s about creating your work and sharing that magic with the world.

Now it’s time to get out there and find out everything there is to know about your dream, ideal, perfect audience! We can’t wait for you to start uncovering all that juicy information so you can make smart decisions for your brand.
